Etymology: < post-classical Latin presbyterissa woman serving the church (8th cent.), priest's wife (11th or 12th cent.; 12th cent. in a British source) < presbyter presbyter n. + -issa -ess suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin presbytera woman serving the church, priest's wife (5th cent.).Compare the following example of post-classical Latin presbyterisse (plural) in an English context:1563 J. Foxe Actes & Monuments 21/2 Priestes then in those daies [c1074] had wiues openly and lawfully..as appeareth by the dedes and writynges of their chapter seales..and were called, by their name, presbyterisse.
