Etymology: < post-classical Latin praefigurativus that prefigures something (15th cent. in à Kempis De Imitatione; compare quot. ?1504 at main sense) < praefigurat- , past participial stem of praefigurare prefigure v. + classical Latin -īvus -ive suffix (compare earlier praefigurative , adverb: see prefiguratively adv.). Compare Middle French prefiguratif (c1485 in an apparently isolated attestation).
That prefigures something; that is a foreshadowing of something.
