Schoolwork done outside teaching periods by a pupil preparing for subsequent lessons, esp. under supervision, as in a private or preparatory school; work assigned to a pupil to be done on this basis; time set aside for such work in a school's routine. Also occasionally as a count noun. Colloquially abbreviated prep (see prep n.3 2). Cf. homework n. 2. N.E.D.(1906) s.v. reports Bishop John Percival, the first headmaster of Clifton College, Bristol, as stating that preparation was ‘used..from the beginning [i.e. 1862], the boys..calling it Prep.’ The full form is now largely restricted to formal contexts.
