1967 Proc. Soc. Exper. Biol. & Med. 125 1062/1 Pregnanolone..was found to be a very potent, short-acting hypnotic agent in experimental animals.

1985 Brit. Med. Jrnl. 1 June 1621/1 The 5B reduced metabolite, pregnanolone,..appears to be responsible for the well known hypnotic effect of progesterone.

2005 New Scientist 3 Sept. 9/1 Babies are sedated and unconscious throughout pregnancy, as both the fetal brain and placenta produce potent sleep-inducing hormones, including the neurosteroidal anaesthetic pregnanolone.
