Etymology: < pregn- (in pregnane n.) + -ene comb. form + -ol suffix + -one suffix, after German Pregnenolon (A. Butenandt & U. Westphal 1934, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 67 2085).
Biochemistry and Medicine.
A naturally occurring neuroactive steroid which is a precursor of progesterone and other steroid hormones and has been used an anti-inflammatory agent; 3β-hydroxypregn-5-en-20-one, C21H32O2.
