Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: pre- prefix, gravid adj.
Etymology: < pre- prefix + gravid adj., after German prägravid (L. Frankel in W. Liepmann Kurzgefasstes Handb. der gesamten Frauenheilkunde (1914) III. v. 108).

Designating or relating to a woman or a female animal prior to pregnancy or (in some invertebrates, e.g. mosquitoes) prior to completion of oogenesis.
