Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin praebendarius, praebendaria.
Etymology: As noun in sense A. 1 < post-classical Latin praebendarius (11th cent.; frequently 1217–1686 in British sources; earlier denoting a dependant who renders service in return for daily sustenance (8th cent.)), use as noun of masculine of praebendarius , adjective (see below); compare Anglo-Norman prebender , prebendere (see prebendar n.), Old Occitan prebendari , Italian prebendario (14th cent.), all in sense ‘holder of a prebend’. As noun in sense A. 2 < post-classical Latin praebendaria (from 13th cent. in British sources), use as noun of feminine of praebendarius , adjective (see below); compare prebend n. As adjective < post-classical Latin praebendarius of or relating to the holder of a prebend (11th cent.), having a prebend (from 12th cent. in British sources), also designating daily service in return for sustenance, or a person who renders such service (11th cent.) < praebenda prebend n. + classical Latin -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare earlier prebendal adj.
A. n.
1. The holder of a prebend; (formerly) a canon of a cathedral or collegiate church who obtained income from a prebend; (in later use) an honorary canon in any of various Anglican cathedrals.Originally, each canon had a praebenda or share in the funds of the church to which the clergy-house was attached; in later times when the custom grew up of assigning a particular estate for the support of a particular canon, the latter received also the designation of prebendary from the estate so assigned, e.g. ‘Canon of St Paul's and Prebendary of Finsbury’. By the Ecclesiastical Duties and Revenues Act of 1840, the members of a cathedral chapter (except the dean) are now called canons (see canon n.2 2a); but the title of prebendary is retained in some cathedrals for some members of the chapter.
