Etymology: < Middle French preseance right of taking a higher seat than another person, precedence (1578; earlier as précéance (1562); French préséance precedence, superiority) < pre- pre- prefix + seance right to take a certain place (of honour), right to take part in a session, sitting order at a table (see séance n.).
Obsolete.
