Etymology: < classical Latin precēs, plural of prec-, prex prayer < the same Indo-European base as frayne v. Compare Old French preces (end of the 11th cent.).The nominative and genitive singular of classical Latin prex are recorded only in grammars and glossaries.
Prayers, esp. prayers said or chanted responsorially; (also) spec. intercessions made by the priest between the Lord's Prayer and the first Collect at matins and evensong.In quot. ?c1450 used with singular agreement.
