Etymology: < Middle French preciosité (French préciosité ) preciousness (c1300 in Old French), price, value (1466–7), affectation (c1475), affectedly refined or fastidious manners or language (1664) < classical Latin pretiōsitāt- , pretiōsitās costliness, preciousness, in post-classical Latin also precious object (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < pretiōsus precious adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix); compare -osity suffix. Compare Italian preziosità (1305–6 as preziositade ), Portuguese preciosidade (15th cent.). Compare also Middle French precieuseté preciousness, precious thing (c1370 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier preciousness n. and slightly later precioushead n.
