Etymology: < pre- prefix + iota n. (representing the palatal glide y /j/; compare yod n. 2) + -ated suffix, after preiotation n. Compare earlier preiotized adj. and preiotization n.In quot. 1979 translating German präjotiert (1963 in the passage translated).
Linguistics.
Of a vowel: preceded by a palatal glide; spec. (in Slavonic languages) designating such a vowel that palatalizes or softens a preceding consonant.
