Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: pre- prefix, lacteal adj.
Etymology: < pre- prefix + lacteal adj. In senses A. 1 and B. 1 after German Vor-Milchzähne (plural noun) prelacteal teeth (W. Leche 1895, in Bibliotheca Zoologica XVII. 149).
A. adj.
1. Zoology. Of or designating certain vestigial, embryonic toothlike structures occurring in the jaws of marsupials and some other mammals, regarded as the remnants of two successive primitive dentitions that formed prior to the development of the milk teeth.

1895 Science 22 Nov. 686/2 These ‘prelacteal’ teeth, as they are called, were first observed by Leche, in 1892, in certain Insectivora, but they have subsequently been found among the Marsupialia and in the seals.
