Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman prelacioun and Middle French prelacion, prelation (French prélation , now historical and only in legal senses) ecclesiastical dignity (13th cent. in Old French), eminent position, especially in the hierarchy of the church (1316), preferment, elevation, precedence, superiority (1294 in Anglo-Norman), the overlord's right of pre-emption (1520; compare Old Occitan dreg de prelatio (first half of the 14th cent.)), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin praelātiōn-, praelātiō action of preferring or giving precedence, in post-classical Latin also action of placing before (4th cent.), authority (from 7th cent. in British and continental sources), dignity or office of prelate (late 8th or early 9th cent.; frequently from 11th cent. in British sources) < praelāt- , past participial stem of praeferre prefer v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
