Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin praeludium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin praeludium preliminary action (frequently c1175–1517 in British sources), prelude to a play or literary work (from c1188 in British sources), series of notes played before a piece of music (1448 with reference to an organ piece) < classical Latin praelūdere prelude v. + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare earlier prelude n. and the Romance parallels cited at that entry.
A prelude or introduction; a preliminary; a precursor or foreshadowing.
