单词 prime gilt
释义

prime giltn.

Brit. /ˈprʌɪm ˌɡɪlt/, U.S. /ˈpraɪm ˌɡɪlt/, Scottish English /ˈprʌim ˌɡɪlt/
Forms: pre-1700 prim gilt, pre-1700 prin gilt (perhaps transmission error), pre-1700 pryme gilt, pre-1700 pryme giltt, pre-1700 prym gelt, pre-1700 prym gilt, pre-1700 pryn gilt (perhaps transmission error), pre-1700 1700s– prime gilt.
Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by compounding. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Or (iii) a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: prime v.2, gilt n.2; Middle Low German prīmegelt, Dutch priemgelt.
Etymology: Apparently either < prime v.2 (compare prime v.2 1) + gilt n.2, or < either Middle Low German prīmegelt, prīmgelt (1468), or Dutch †priemgelt (Middle Dutch priemgelt (1460)), both in sense ‘money paid to the captain or crew of a ship for taking care of the cargo’, also ‘bonus or gratuity paid to the captain or crew of a ship’, and both < a first element of uncertain origin (compare earlier primage n.1, prime v.2) + respectively Middle Low German gelt and Middle Dutch gelt ‘money’ (see geld n.2, and compare gelt n.2, gild n.2). Compare earlier primage n.1 in same sense, and the post-classical Latin form cited at that entry.Compare ( < Middle Low German) German Primgeld (early 18th cent. or earlier; now historical), Danish primegelt (late 17th cent. or earlier), Old Swedish primgiäld (1478; Swedish†primegelt).
Scottish. Now chiefly historical.
