Etymology: < post-classical Latin praestigiat-, past participial stem (see -ate suffix3) of praestigiare (also praestigiari) to deceive (4th cent.), to deceive by trick or magic (from 13th cent. in British sources), to practise magic (after 1413, 1579 in British sources) < classical Latin praestīgia prestige n. Compare Middle French prestigier to dazzle (1533), Italian †prestigiare to deceive (a1311). Compare earlier prestigiation n., prestigiator n., prestigiatory adj.
