Etymology: < French prolonge strap, belt (1349 in Middle French), rope used to manoeuvre cannon (1568) < prolonger prolong v. N.E.D. (1908) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (prolōṅʒ) /prɔlɔ̃ʒ/.
Military. Obsolete.
A rope composed of three pieces joined by two open rings, having a hook at one end and a toggle at the other, forming part of the equipment of a gun carriage.
