Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πρόμαχος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πρόμαχος champion, in Hellenistic Greek as the title of various tutelary gods, e.g. Hermes, Heracles (Hercules), in Byzantine Greek also as the title of Athena (4th cent. a.d.), use as noun of πρόμαχος fighting in front, fighting for < προ- pro- prefix1 + -μαχος -mach comb. form. Compare post-classical Latin promachus (16th cent.).
Greek History. rare.
A person who fights before or on behalf of another; a champion. Also figurative.
