Etymology: < post-classical Latin praesumptorie, adverb (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian; < praesumptorius (adjective) arrogant, presumptuous (although this is first attested later: 5th cent.; < praesumptor person who has confidence, overconfident person (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), usurper (4th cent.; < classical Latin praesumpt- , past participial stem of praesūmere presume v. + -or -or suffix) + classical Latin -ius , suffix forming adjectives; compare -ory suffix2) + , suffix forming adverbs) + -ly suffix2. Compare earlier presumptiously adv., presumptuously adv., presumantly adv., presumingly adv.
