单词 primogenit
释义

primogenitn.adj.

Brit. /ˌprʌɪmə(ʊ)ˈdʒɛnɪt/, U.S. /ˌpraɪmoʊˈdʒɛnət/
Forms:

α. late Middle English 1600s 1900s– primogenit, 1600s primogenite.

β. 1600s primogenitus, 1600s primogeniti (plural).

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin primogenitus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin primogenitus (adjective and noun) first-born (Vetus Latina, Vulgate), probably < classical Latin prīmus prime adj. + genitus , past participle of gignere to beget (see genital adj.), after Hellenistic Greek πρωτότοκος first-born (Septuagint, New Testament; the post-classical Latin word probably thus shows the connecting vowel -o- rather than the expected -i- after Hellenistic Greek πρωτό- in πρωτότοκος), or perhaps < classical Latin prīmō (adverb) first + genitus. Compare Middle French primogenit (adjective) first-born (14th cent.; also as primogenite (1350)), Catalan primogènit (1362 as noun, c1400 as adjective), Spanish primogénito (c1200 or earlier as noun, mid 13th cent. or earlier as adjective), Portuguese primogênito (14th cent.), Italian primogenito (end of the 13th cent.).
