Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Prince Albert.
Etymology: < the name of Prince Albert (see Albert n.2). For an explanation of use of the word in sense 1 see quot. 19451 at sense 1. In sense 2 with reference to such a ring supposedly worn by Victorian men, including Prince Albert (see quot. 1977 at sense 2).
1. slang (originally and chiefly Australian). In plural. Strips of cloth wound round the toes or feet and worn, esp. by tramps or swagmen, inside boots in place of socks; toerags. Occasionally also: rough boots worn by tramps, etc. Now historical.
