Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin praevaricant-, praevaricans.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin praevaricant-, praevaricans wicked (4th cent.), use as adjective of classical Latin praevāricant- , praevāricāns , present participle of praevāricārī (see prevaricate v.). Compare Middle French prevaricant (noun) unfaithful, lawless person (late 14th cent. as prevaricat (transmission error) in an isolated attestation). Compare earlier prevaricate adj., prevaricating adj.
Obsolete. rare.
Deviating from the right course or method; irregular, improper.
