Compare post-classical Latin princeps elector (1356 (in the Golden Bull: compare bull n.2 3) or earlier; 1440 in a British source), Middle French, French prince électeur (second half of the 15th cent. or earlier; after German; now historical). Compare earlier elector n. 3.
