Etymology: < French princesse lointaine, literally ‘faraway princess’ (1920 or earlier in this sense; 1895 in the title of the play La princesse lointaine by E. Rostand (1868–1918)) < princesse princess n. + lointaine , feminine of lointain faraway (see lontaigne adj.).Rostand's play is based on a legend in the anonymous Vida (semi-fictional biography) of the 12th-cent. troubadour Jaufré Rudel, who was noted for developing the theme of amor de lonh (also amor lonhdana), lit. ‘love from afar’, in his poems. The Vida tells how Jaufré heard about the Countess of Tripoli and fell madly in love with her without even having seen her, composed many poems in her honour, and embarked on a long overseas voyage in order to set eyes on her just once.
