Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare provet , variant of privet n.2 In β forms probably altered after probe n.The instrument was invented and probably also named by Walter Rumsey (c1584–1660), English barrister.
Medicine and (now chiefly) Veterinary Medicine.
A long, slender, flexible instrument (originally made of whalebone) with a sponge, ball, button, or other attachment at one or both ends, used chiefly to probe or remove foreign bodies from the oesophagus.
