Compare prow adj., prew n., and later preux adj.Apparently attested earlier as a surname, Robert Prue (1270), although it is uncertain whether this reflects the Anglo-Norman or the Middle English word.

Brave, valiant, or gallant; full of prowess. Also: proud, haughty. Cf. preux chevalier n.
