Origin: Partly a borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin Priapismus ; Priapus n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin Priapismus abnormal persistent erection of the penis (5th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek Πριαπισμός (Galen) < Πριαπίζειν priapize v. + -ισμός -ism suffix. Compare Middle French, French priapisme (second half of the 15th cent. or earlier). In later senses (which are not paralleled in French or Latin) probably independently < Priapus n. + -ism suffix. With sense 2a compare earlier Priapus n. 2.
