Etymology: < principal adj. + the plural of part n.1 Compare post-classical Latin principales partes, with reference to active and passive as the main voices of the verb, and to noun and verb as the main parts of speech (4th cent.).
Grammar.
The forms of a verb from which all other inflected forms can be deduced, or which contain the different stems in their simplest forms.In Latin Grammar, applied to the first person singular present indicative, the infinitive mood, the first person singular perfect indicative, and the supine (or in deponent verbs, instead of the two last, the perfect participle).
