Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin prō, confessō, confessus, confītērī.
Etymology: < classical Latin prō pro prep. + confessō, ablative of confessus, past participle of confītērī to confess (see confess v.). The phrase pro confesso was probably used earlier in post-classical Latin, but has not been traced.
Law (now chiefly U.S.).
As if confessed or admitted.
