Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prosenchyma.
Etymology: < scientific Latin prosenchyma ( H. F. Link Elementae philos. bot. (1824) 77) < ancient Greek πρός close to (see prosody n.) + scientific Latin -enchyma -enchyma comb. form, after parenchyma n.With the β. forms compare parenchyme n., and also French prosenchyme, German Prosenchym (both 19th cent.).
Botany and Mycology.
Originally (now rare): tissue found typically in fibrovascular tissue (wood, bast, etc.) consisting of spindle-shaped, usually elongated, cells closely placed with their ends interpenetrating and often with the terminal partitions obliterated so as to form ducts or vessels; frequently contrasted with parenchyma or soft tissue. Later also: fungal tissue composed of loosely woven, typically elongated, hyphae; contrasted with pseudoparenchyma.

1849 J. H. Balfour Man. Bot. §29 Woody Fibre, or Ligneous Tissue, Pleurenchyma..consists of tubes, or according to some elongated cells, of a fusiform..shape... Some have called this tissue Prosenchyma.., a term, however, generally applied to shortened fusiform cells only.
1885 Science 9 Jan. 36/2 In palms and tree-ferns there is too litlle prosenchyme to satisfy Sach's doctrine.
1962 C. J. Alexopoulos Introd. Mycol. (ed. 2) i. 13 Prosenchyma..is a rather loosely woven tissue in which the component hyphae lie more or less parallel to one another.
1989 Amer. Jrnl. Bot. 76 475/1 Venning (1949) described the connective and conjunctive tissue as a kind of modified wood prosenchyma with transverse ends and thick lignified walls without pits.
1994 New Phytologist 127 733/2 Prosenchyma refers to a mantle where there are air spaces between the hyphal elements, while in synenchyma there are no air spaces.
