Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: psychro- comb. form, -phore comb. form.
Etymology: < psychro- comb. form + -phore comb. form, perhaps after German Psychrophor (1881 or earlier). Compare Hellenistic Greek ψυχροϕόρος carrying cold water. N.E.D. (1909) also gives the pronunciation psəi·krŏfoəɹ /ˈpsaɪkrəfɔə(r)/.
Medicine. Now historical.
A kind of catheter kept at a low temperature by a flow of cold water, inserted into the urethra in order to cool it.

1890 J. S. Billings National Med. Dict. II Psychrophore, a double~current catheter without an eye; for the application of cold to the urethra, also called refrigerating sound.
1973 Urology 1 625/1 It is doubtful that psychrophores were used as primary treatment but rather as an adjunct.
