Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prīma.
Etymology: Apparently < classical Latin prīma, feminine (perhaps used as noun, short for prīma pagīna first page) of prīmus prime adj. Compare German Prime (1783 in this sense; now ‘signature on the lower margin of the first sheet of each quire, indicating the relative position of that quire within the book, and giving the book title and sometimes the author’). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (prəi·mă) /ˈpraɪmə/.
Typography. Obsolete. rare.
The page of printer's copy on which a new sheet begins and on which the first word of the sheet is marked.
