Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian prima buffa.
Etymology: < Italian prima buffa leading female singer or role in a comic opera (although this is apparently first attested later: a1825 or earlier) < prima , feminine of primo first (see prime adj.) + buffa comic actress, feminine form corresponding to buffo buffo n.
The leading female singer or role in a comic opera, esp. in the 18th-century Italian opera buffa. Now chiefly historical.
