Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: pro- prefix2, Greek κοῖλος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + ancient Greek κοῖλος hollow (see cœlo- comb. form1) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier procoelian adj.
Zoology.
Designating or relating to vertebrae whose centra are concave anteriorly. Also: (of a reptile) having such vertebrae, as a crocodile. Cf. amphicœlous adj., opisthocoelous adj.
