Etymology: < scientific Latin Procolophon, genus name ( R. Owen Descr. & Illustr. Catal. Fossil Reptilia S. Afr. in Coll. Brit. Mus. (1876) 25; < ancient Greek προ- pro- prefix2 + κολοϕών summit, apex: see colophon n.) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Procolophonidae, family name (1889 or earlier).

A reptile of the extinct family Procolophonidae, which comprised small plant-eating cotylosaurs found from the Permian to late Triassic periods.
