Inflections: Plural pronubae.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prōnuba.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōnuba woman who attended a bride < prō- pro- prefix1 + the stem of nūbere to marry (see nubile adj.1). Compare Italian pronuba (1532). In sense 2 after scientific Latin Pronuba, former genus name (C. V. Riley 1872, in Nature 26 Sept. 444/1), so called with reference to the moth's role in pollinating the yucca plant.
1. Roman History. A woman chosen to officiate or assist at a marriage ceremony; a matron of honour.Also used as an epithet of the goddess Juno.
