单词 profanity
释义

profanityn.

Brit. /prəˈfanᵻti/, U.S. /prəˈfænədi/, /proʊˈfænədi/
Forms: 1500s–1600s prophanitie, 1500s–1600s prophanity, 1600s– profanity; Scottish pre-1700 profanitie, pre-1700 profanitye, pre-1700 prophanite, pre-1700 prophanitie, pre-1700 prophantie, pre-1700 1700s– profanity.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin profanitas.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin profanitas pagan authors (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), quality of being profane, impiety (Vetus Latina) < classical Latin profānus profane adj. + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix). Compare Middle French prophanité profane item (1492 in an apparently isolated attestation; French profanité profaneness (1894)), Spanish profanidade (a1526), Portuguese profanidade (1572), Italian profanità (a1595).Compare slightly later profaneness n., which was, however, apparently the more common word until the end of the 18th cent. (although perhaps not in Scots). Even in the early 19th cent., profanity is still absent from some dictionaries, and its use still invited comment in the mid 19th cent.:1846 J. E. Worcester Universal Dict. Eng. Lang. (at cited word) It is in common use in America and in Scotland, and it is also used by respectable English authors. The spelling history is similar to that of profane adj. (see discussion at that entry).
The fact, quality, or condition of being profane; profane conduct or speech; (also) an instance of this, a profane or obscene act or word (frequently in plural).
