Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymon: Russian Profintern.
Etymology: < Russian Profintern < prof- (in profsojuznyj (adjective) trade-union) + intern- (in internacional (noun) international), after Komintern Comintern n. Compare the full name of the organization, Krasnyj Internacional Profsojuzov Red International of Trade Unions.The word is sometimes pronounced with the stress on the third syllable, after the Russian pronunciation.
Now historical.
An international organization of left-wing trade unions, founded in Moscow in 1921 and dissolved in 1937.
