Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: pro- prefix1, fulgent adj.; Latin fulgent-, fulgēns.
Etymology: < pro- prefix1 + either fulgent adj. or its etymon classical Latin fulgent-, fulgēns. Compare post-classical Latin profulgentissimus (superlative) brilliant, illustrious (c1185 in a British source). Compare refulgent adj., and earlier prefulgent adj.Quot. 1561 perhaps simply shows a transmission error for prefulgent adj.; compare quot. c1480 at prefulgent adj. for the reading of the unique mansuscript.
Obsolete. rare (poetic).
