Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin propylaeum.
Etymology: < classical Latin propylaeum (only recorded in plural propylaea ) monumental gateway, especially the entrance to the Acropolis at Athens < ancient Greek προπύλαιον (usually in plural προπύλαια ), use as noun of neuter of προπύλαιος (adjective) before the gate < προ- pro- prefix2 + πύλη gate (see -pyle comb. form) + -αιος , suffix forming adjectives. Compare propylon n. N.E.D. (1909) gives only the pronunciation (prǫpilī·ɒ̆m) /prɒpɪˈliːəm/.
1. An entrance to a temple or other sacred enclosure. Hence more generally: a gateway, porch, or vestibule. Also in plural in same sense.Used esp. with reference to buildings of classical antiquity.
