Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prosphysis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prosphysis (1598 or earlier) < ancient Greek πρόσϕυσις attachment, point of attachment, after-growth, in Hellenistic Greek also adhesion < πρός to (see prosody n.) + ϕύσις growth (see physis n.), after προσϕύεσθαι to grow on to or upon. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (pr ǫ·sfisis) /ˈprɒsfɪsɪs/.
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
Abnormal union or adhesion of body parts; an instance of this, an adhesion.

1738 E. Chambers Cycl. (ed. 2) at Adhesion Anatomists sometimes observe prosphyses, or Adhesions of the lungs to the sides of the thorax, the pleura, and diaphragm.
1842 R. Dunglison Med. Lexicon (ed. 3) Prosphysis, ‘adhesion, adherence, connexion’... In a more limited sense, this word means morbid adhesion of the eyelids, either between themselves, or with the globe of the eye.
