prostanoic acid n. a fatty acid whose molecular structure is the basis of the structures of the prostaglandins.Prostanoic acid is 7-(2-octylcyclopentyl)heptanoic acid; C20H38O2. Its molecule consists of a five-membered ring to which a saturated chain of eight carbon atoms and one of seven are attached at adjacent positions, the shorter chain ending in a carboxyl group.
