Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: pro- prefix2, Greek σθένος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + ancient Greek σθένος strength (see asthenia n.) + -ic suffix. Compare metasthenic adj. and n. at meta- prefix 3. N.E.D. (1909) gives the pronunciation as (prosþe·nik) /prəʊsˈθɛnɪk/.
Obsolete. rare.

Zoology. In J. D. Dana's terminology: having the major locomotor appendages in the anterior part of the body. Contrasted with metasthenic adj. and n. at meta- prefix 3.
