Inflections: Plural prostomia.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element, combined with a Latin element. Etymons: pro- prefix2, Greek στόμα, Latin -ium.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.) + classical Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare ancient Greek προστόμιον mouth, especially of a river, in Hellenistic Greek also joining of the lips. Compare slightly later peristomium n. 2.
Zoology.
In various invertebrates: a part of the body situated in front of or anterior to the mouth; esp. (in annelid worms) the lobe or region anterior to the mouth (and to the first metameric segment), which in polychaetes contains the brain and bears eyes and sensory appendages. Cf. peristomium n. 2.
