Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: pro- prefix2, Greek γάμος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < pro- prefix2 + ancient Greek γάμος marriage (see -gamy comb. form) + -ic suffix (compare gamic adj.). In sense 2 probably after German progam (V. Häcker 1902, in Jenaische Zeitschrift f. Naturwissensch. 37 389). Compare earlier progamous adj.
Biology.
1. Existing or occurring prior to the formation of gametes. Now rare.In quot. 1891, designating a form of asexual reproduction in which fusion occurs between nuclei of two secondary oocytes.
