Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: propaganda n., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < propaganda n. + -ist suffix. In sense A. 1 after French propagandiste, noun (1792 or earlier); compare German Propagandist (1791), Italian propagandista (1798), Spanish propagandista (early 19th cent. or earlier), probably all after French (although the German word seems to be attested slightly earlier than its apparent French model). With sense A. 2 compare French propagandiste member of the Congregation of the Propaganda (1800). With the use as adjective compare French propagandiste, adjective (1850).
