Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin proparoxytonus , -ous suffix; Greek προπαροξύτονος , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin proparoxytonus (5th cent.) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek προπαροξύτονος having an acute accent on the antepenultimate syllable + -ous suffix. Compare slightly later proparoxytone adj.
