Forms: late Middle English pretensyuely, 1600s 1800s– protensively.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin prōtēns- , prōtendere , -ive suffix, -ly suffix2; protensive adj., -ly suffix2.
Etymology: < classical Latin prōtēns-, past participial stem of prōtendere protend v. + -ive suffix + -ly suffix2. In later use in sense 2 probably partly also < protensive adj. + -ly suffix2.With the form in pre- compare discussion at pro- prefix2.
Now rare.
1. In respect of length or linear extension. Cf. protensive adj. 2. Obsolete. rare.
