Etymology: < propel v. + -ment suffix. With sense 2 compare earlier propelling n., propulsion n.
1. The propelling mechanism of a clock or clockwork device; spec. an escapement in which the pallets drive the escape wheel (instead of the reverse, as in a regular clock). Obsolete.
