Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin prolapsus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin prolapsus action of falling (Vetus Latina), fault, error (5th cent.), prolapse of the uterus (1564 in Fernelius: see quot. 1636) < classical Latin prōlāps- , past participial stem of prōlābi to slip forward or down ( < prō- pro- prefix1 + lābi to fall: see labent adj.) + -tus , suffix forming verbal nouns. Compare earlier prolapsion n.
